We are celebrating twenty months of work with Abgeiba, this is her journey and learnings at Modulai so far.

One of the things that I like the most about working in machine learning is that you can apply ML to almost any field. Since I started working at Modulai, I have been able to work on many different projects. So far, I have worked on projects related to health care, finance, e-commerce, drones, and social networks. I feel that having worked on very diverse problems has not only helped me learn about different techniques and tools but also about how to approach a real-life problem with ML.

A key learning for me has been understanding the problem and discussing expectations with the client. Ensure you are on the same page and that the task is reasonable for the project’s duration. Second, understand the data. Not knowing your data well can waste you a lot of time and make the problem much more difficult. Finally, another key takeaway is to start with a “simple” solution and iterate over it with more sophisticated techniques.

For me, the people and the projects we get are the best things about working at Modulai. The projects are chosen carefully, so we actually get to apply ML and challenge ourselves. As a small company, we all know each other and get along very well. Also, everyone is very knowledgeable and passionate about ML. I have learned many things from my colleagues. We often discuss new technologies and techniques, we discuss what we have learned on our projects, and advise each other. When I am stuck on a problem, I can always ask someone for help. 

Abgeiba holds an M.Sc. in Machine Learning from KTH, Stockholm, and a B.Sc. in Telecommunications and Electronics from Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico. She also studied at KAIST in South Korea.
